Choosing a sleeping position for pregnant women, according to Islam is permissible. They can choose the position to get the most comfortable way of sleeping. It is better to follow what the doctor said about the sleeping position.

According to Islam, the sleep of pregnant women can bring benefits. These benefits are like the benefits of the Duha prayer. Moreover, it is already mentioned in the Quran surah Al Ahqaf for the part of verse 15 below.

وَوَصَّيْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ اِحْسَانًا ۗحَمَلَتْهُ اُمُّهٗ كُرْهًا وَّوَضَعَتْهُ كُرْهًا ۗوَحَمْلُهٗ وَفِصٰلُهٗ ثَلٰثُوْنَ شَهْرًا ۗ

“We will instruct humans to do good to their parents. His mother had conceived him with difficulty and gave birth to him with difficulty (too). Conceive until weaning it for thirty months …” (QS 46:15)

2. Sleeping on a left side

Sleeping on the left side is an ideal position for pregnant women according to Islamic rule. Moreover, it can improve blood circulation. This makes it optimal for the fetus, uterus, kidney, and heart.

Most Muslims believe that sleeping on the left side with their knees bent is one of the recommended sleep positions for pregnant women according to Islam. Most Muslim women already followed this idea of practicing Sunnah. They apply morning habits in an Islamic way.

Practicing Sunnah is one of the practices of good deeds for Muslims. It is already mentioned in the Quran surah Al Hashr verse 7 below.

مَآ اَفَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى رَسُوْلِهٖ مِنْ اَهْلِ الْقُرٰى فَلِلّٰهِ وَلِلرَّسُوْلِ وَلِذِى الْقُرْبٰى وَالْيَتٰمٰى وَالْمَسٰكِيْنِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيْلِۙ كَيْ لَا يَكُوْنَ دُوْلَةً ۢ بَيْنَ الْاَغْنِيَاۤءِ مِنْكُمْۗ وَمَآ اٰتٰىكُمُ الرَّسُوْلُ فَخُذُوْهُ وَمَا نَهٰىكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوْاۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ ۗاِنَّ اللّٰهَ شَدِيْدُ الْعِقَابِۘ

“Anything (wealth obtained without war) that Allah bestowed on His Messenger from residents of several countries is for Allah, the Messenger, relatives (Rasul), orphans, the poor, and people on the way. (Thus) so that the wealth does not circulate only among the rich among you. What the Prophet gave you, accept it. What he forbids you to leave. Fear Allah. Verily, Allah is severe in punishment. “(QS 59:7)

3. Avoid sleeping in the back

During pregnancy, avoid certain sleeping positions. For example, individuals can get some benefits of patience in Islam. Sleeping in the back for pregnant women is not allowed according to Islam. The position will bring the women to hold their weight on their backs.

That means the position of sleeping on the back of pregnant women can be dangerous for them. It can lead to hypotension because of low blood tension and make them dizzy.

Pregnant women should avoid that position and do good deeds instead. Such as mentioned in the Quran surah Al A’raf verse 23 below.

قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَآ اَنْفُسَنَا وَاِنْ لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُوْنَنَّ مِنَ الْخٰسِرِيْنَ

“Both said, “O our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and do not have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.” (QS 7:23)

4. Using plenty pillows

Using plenty of pillows is one of the ways to sleep for pregnant women according to Islam. Most Muslims already follow this Islamic rule bring a good habit for them. Plenty of pillows help pregnant women to improve a good night’s sleep better than before.

Plenty of pillows also help pregnant women for supporting their legs, and back to cuddle. It is a Sunnah to follow good deeds, which they can apply as mentioned in the Quran surah Ali Imran verse 172 below.

اَلَّذِيْنَ اسْتَجَابُوْا لِلّٰهِ وَالرَّسُوْلِ مِنْۢ بَعْدِ مَآ اَصَابَهُمُ الْقَرْحُ ۖ لِلَّذِيْنَ اَحْسَنُوْا مِنْهُمْ وَاتَّقَوْا اَجْرٌ عَظِيْمٌۚ

“(Namely) those who fulfill (call) Allah and the Messenger after they suffered injuries (in the Battle of Uhud). Those who do good and are pious among themselves will receive a very great reward,” (QS 3:172)

5. Stick to a regular sleep

The sleep of pregnant women according to Islam is stuck to their regular. Sticking to their regular sleep will improve them to a good night’s sleep. Relaxing the body and avoiding having too much water can help them to stick to their routine.

Pregnant women who follow Islam and get regular sleep will keep their bodies healthy. It is helpful to them and their baby as well. Moreover, Muslims consider following a good routine a good deed in Islam.

It is already mentioned in the Quran surah An Nisa verse 113.

وَاَنْزَلَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتٰبَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَعَلَّمَكَ مَا لَمْ تَكُنْ تَعْلَمُۗ وَكَانَ فَضْلُ اللّٰهِ عَلَيْكَ عَظِيْمًا

“… Allah has sent down the Book (Al-Qur’an) and wisdom (sunna) to you and has taught you what you did not know before. God’s gift bestowed on you is very great.” (QS 4:113)

Pregnant women, according to Islam, should follow these sleep guidelines. Anyone looking to do good deeds can also follow them. May Allah give His blessing and mercy to them for every good deed they’ve done so far.
