Is Music Prohibited in Islam?

There are some differences among scholars about music. Some scholars say music is Haram as per the hadith Sahih Al Bukhari Vol 7 Book Of Drinks Hadith 5590, which states that:-

That he heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, “From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And some people will stay near the side of a mountain, and in the evening, their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, ‘Return to us tomorrow.’

Also there are few similar Hadiths which prohibit music.

On the other hand, scholars say that music is not altogether haram but is permissible in situations where it is used to praise God and does not contain inappropriate stuff. These scholars use the following hadith :-

Narrated Aisha: Abu Bakr came to my house while two small Ansari girls were singing beside me the stories of the Ansar concerning the Day of Bath. And they were not singers. Abu Bakr said protestingly, “musical instruments of Satan in the house of Allah’s Apostle !” It happened on the ‘Id day, and Allah’s Apostle said, “O Abu Bakr! There is an ‘Id for every nation, and this is our ‘Id.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book #15, Eids, Hadith #72)

Based on Hadiths, generally, you may find differences of opinions among scholars on many things as people from different sects of Islam believe in various hadiths. So I am no one to give judgement about it. Allah knows best.

But one thing is sure the kind of music and singing which goes on nowadays in movies, albums, and raps are Haram. There is no doubt in it. For such music and songs, every scholar will agree about being Haram.

Why are Musical Instruments considered to be Haram?

According to most Muslims and Muslim scholars, music and most musical instruments have been forbidden throughout the ages.

The answer is that all of them are haram, especially drums, except a guitar or a flute played softly for Islamic devotional songs. Even those are not encouraged. Singing devotional songs is limited to men’s voices singing softly if any. Music of any kind, in general, is discouraged.

Music preoccupies humans with the remembrance of God. When you listen to music, you feel the beat of the drums, and you want to dance; you want to get lost in the rhythm. You forget your duty to your God and possibly skip your prayers.
